This tip may seem very obvious to most. We certainly hope it does. Unfortunately, not everyone gets it, as evidenced by the fact that we know of companies who regularly request a exception to this rule and various language service providers that rarely follow it. So we are including this tip here for the benefit of those who are not yet believers.

Would you publish websites, marketing collateral, contracts, advertisements, product documentation, or packaging for the world to see without having a 2nd pair of eyes check to ensure everything was perfect? No. Likewise, every translation should be edited by a second linguist to ensure perfection. Yes, the first linguist should be a native-speaking subject matter expert who completes a checklist of quality controls and uses all the right tools (i.e. glossaries, style guides, translation memory, etc.) to ensure the translation is right the first time. However, it is still essential that quality translation be checked by at least (repeat, at the very least) one additional linguist.

Yes, there are very rare exceptions when this may not be necessary, for example, when someone only needs to glance at a strictly internal document to merely get the gist of it. However, these are very rare exceptions indeed.
